Free SEO and it's at your fingertips!
Following on from my post last month about Google's Panda update, we'll look this month at what website owners can do themselves in terms of free SEO.
We know how vitally important good content is for high search engine positions or SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages), and since Panda, all business owners now have to think of new, but ethical, ways of to increase their website's rankings and keep their site(s) at the top. In general terms, most SEO is best left to those who have an in-depth knowledge of the subject but there are so many things that a layman can do to further build on the good work already done by the SEO techs. In this article, we'll look at a free seo tip that anyone can use to increase the relevance of their website in the eyes of Google, Bing and Yahoo and obtain better SE rankings.
Etymology: Web log (shortened to blog)
Where to begin. . .
Just pick a topic that is relevant to your website or business; it may be something that your business has recently done such as an exhibition you attended, new legislation that affects your customers or it could just be a job you have completed for a client. Get your facts assembled in some sort of logical order and then convert this into interesting reading that your audience will appreciate. If you don't have time to write a long post, no problem - better to do something of quality than nothing at all.
Use linking to strengthen your keywords.
Example: Google's recent
Panda update has changed search engine optimisation. The bit that is hyperlinked is known as 'anchor text' and this activates the link in Google's eyes. So avoid using linked text such as 'here' or 'contact', as this serves no useful purpose at all. Use linked keywords that relate to your business, your website, or your products and services; example -

Getting it out to the masses.
Many blogs - such as the
wysi system blog - include comments modules so your readers can reply to a thread. Invite responses from your audience, get people discussing issues.
Post a short piece on your Twitter or Facebook page with a link back to your blog. These count as incoming links. Do the same with your LinkedIn account. Notice how the wysi blog does this under each post - it is easy for readers to quickly click on one of the shared services links.
You don't need to be a Booker Prize winner to blog.
OK - there's a load of rubbish on the Internet, that's for sure. But there's also a load of rubbish in the newspapers - you choose what you want to read based on the quality of the article and the publication. The same applies to blogs. Blogging requires no degree in literature, just write about your business.
Integral blog or external blog site?
Each has its own advantages: the
wysi blog is an integral module within all our
Business+ websites. How can you tell? Just check the URL - it's
wysi.co.uk (the same as our website). An external blog would be hosted somewhere like blogspot.com or blogger.com (there are hundreds you can choose from).
Personally, I think an integral blog is easier to manage - one log in etc., but I also think the benefits of the website root URL being found in the search engines weighs slightly over any external blog systems. However, no-one can doubt that Google will visiting blogger.com very frequently and that its Pagerank and Alexa rank will be a lot better than those of the average small business website!
If you can't choose, do both. Double the benefits and then you can really get some cross-linking going!
Extra features.
You will see that the wysi blog has quite a few extra features:
- a tag cloud to further improve visibility on the search engines - just do a Google search for 'best business websites' (you'll find us around position 4 and the competition is over one billion!);
- a calendar-type archive of previous blog posts is also another way of securing another bite of the SEO cherry;
- RSS feeds from every blog page make syndication easier;
- and many more, so take a look.
Have a go!
If you get it all wrong you can always delete it! Best to have a go, rather than miss out on this free SEO opportunity.

Hi Andrew, Video content most definitely helps with SEO; in fact some SEO experts are claiming that video SEO is one of the most powerful channels available. Good SEO is all about getting on-site material 100% right, then working off-site which includes
cultivating some good quality back-links - whether these are from PR5 websites, or from YouTube. Blogging is also very powerful, as I am sure you know. We'll be posting our next blog on this subject very soon, but in the meantime if you would like to know
more, just drop us a line or give us a call. Thanks for the comment!
