What's a domain name?

So, you need a website. You will need two additional tools in order to get your business on the web. Firstly, you'll need to register your own (personal) domain name, for example www.mynewbusiness.com. We can do this for you and advise you as to the best choice of domain name. Remember, search engines read the domain name (URL), so getting some keywords in there is always a good idea. You will also require somewhere to host your website. Some businesses believe in registering hundreds of domain names in the rather misguided belief that they will get more internet traffic. This is not necessary at all, but we do recommend clients try to register the .com and .co.uk to secure their intellectual property and prevent other unscrupulous types trying to 'pass off' on the web as you.

How long does it last for?

Domain names are registered for one year with the exception of .co.uk extensions which are registered for two years at purchase. We recommend registering your domain for at least 5 years at purchase for two reasons: Google dislikes new domains that are only registered for one year as it sees them as possible spam sites; secondly, it's off your mind. Our automated domains registry will notify us (and you) when a domain is due to expire, so you can ensure you keep it safe.

Who owns the domain name?

In all cases, you are the registrant and the owner of the domain - be careful! There's some bad press out there for some hosting/ domains companies that register the domain in their name, not yours! Getting control of your own intellectual property can then be very difficult, costly and time-consuming.
