A Content Management System, or CMS, is a sophisticated web application that allows website owners to quickly and easily add content to, or update the content on, their websites. There are many content management systems to choose from, including simple blog platforms such as WordPress, and more flexible and advanced systems such as Siteglide (built on an Adobe core).

Dynamic vs. Static Websites

During the early days of the World Wide Web, most websites were made up of a collection of static pages. If you wanted to add content to your site, you had to create a new page or edit the HTML of one of the existing pages. Content management systems were created as a way to simplify this process and make it possible for people who were not trained in web development techniques to become curators of their own content.

While some content management systems, such as Drupal, can be quite complex and confusing to use, most systems have evolved to the point that they have similar user interfaces to a standard desktop word processor. If you can write a letter in Word or Libre Office, you can add content to your website. Even adding links, creating categories and uploading rich media content can be simple if you choose the right content management system.

The true power of content management systems, however, comes from how they help to separate the content of your website from the way that it looks. Your website's content is not stored in separate files on your server, but inside a database. If you decide that you want to change how your site looks, perhaps by giving it a different colour scheme, altering the header or revamping your logo, this is easy to do. Changing the appearance of your site does not affect the content.

At WYSI, we provide businesses with websites that are powered by Siteglide. This premium content management system combines ease of use with extensibility, search-engine-friendly mark-up and responsive design to ensure the best experience for end users and website owners alike. If you would like to know more about how content management systems work, and how a CMS-based website can benefit you, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. We would be happy to provide you with a free web design consultation and some advice on the best way to proceed with building a website for your business.
