Why Mobile Websites Really Matter for Businesses

Luke Wakefield - Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Why Mobile Websites Really Matter for Businesses. Mobile users come from all walks of life and are far too big an audience to ignore.

While the rest of the economy has been struggling, companies that have a strong online presence, or operate primarily online, have thrived over the last three years. According to 'The Evolution of Online Business', a recent report published by Barclays, online businesses have experienced an average of 11.4% compound annual growth since 2010. That is a rate of growth that is more than 50 times faster than the average for the UK as a whole. A lot of that growth has come from a relatively new sector - mobile internet.

Mobile devices do far more than just make calls and send text messages. Today, mobile devices are becoming increasingly popular as a primary means of accessing the internet. In fact, at the current rate of growth, mobile search volume will exceed desktop search volume by 2015. If you are one of the 59% of business owners that don't have a mobile marketing strategy, you should start working on one soon. Google is already factoring mobile-friendliness into its algorithms, so failure to accommodate mobile devices could hurt your business more than you think.

Websites Designed for Mobile

A few years ago, forward-thinking firms designed and maintained separate desktop and mobile websites. This strategy was a good idea at the time, and helped those companies attract the early adopters who were using primitive (by today's standards) mobile browsers and slow mobile data connections. If you're just getting started with a mobile strategy today, there's no need to go down the labour-intensive route of running separate mobile websites.

WYSI designs websites using a practice called responsive web design. This means that our websites intelligently adapt so that they are attractive and easy to read on any screen, whether that is a mobile phone, a computer monitor or an iPad's Retina Display. Our websites load quickly and render well on any device. This means that you have only one website to maintain and update, one set of analytics to study, and one address to build links for. It's easier for your users, less work for you, and a more cost-effective way to run your website.

Mobile users come from all walks of life and are far too big an audience to ignore. If your current website is not mobile-friendly, get in touch with WYSI today to find out how we can create a sleek, effective and extensible website design that works across all platforms.
